A high-level meeting in Libya brought together key government officials and a delegation from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to discuss the development of a comprehensive food security strategy for the country. The talks were led by Nasr Al-Mahtut, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Local Administration, and Ibrahim Bin Dakhil, Director General of the General Administration for Environmental Sanitation Affairs.
During the session, municipal leaders presented the FAO team with insights into the primary challenges facing local agricultural production and livestock rearing. A major focus was placed on the difficulties in marketing agricultural products, particularly grains, and the barriers to their export or integration into local industries.
In response, the FAO experts proposed a range of solutions to bolster Libya’s food security. A key recommendation was the establishment of cost-effective transportation systems to facilitate the movement of agricultural produce from the southern regions to the north.
This visit by the FAO delegation is part of a broader technical support project, implemented in partnership with Libya’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the Economic and Social Development Council. The initiative aims to strengthen Libya’s agricultural sector and enhance national food security through international cooperation and expert guidance.
