In a joint press conference held today, Libya’s Acting Interior Minister Imad Al-Trabelsi announced that the Ras Jedir border crossing with Tunisia will open temporarily on Thursday. The opening will initially be limited to humanitarian and special cases, ahead of its full reopening scheduled for the 20th of this month. The announcement came following a high-level meeting between Al-Trabelsi and his Tunisian counterpart, Khaled Al-Nouri.
The two ministers signed a security agreement outlining the reopening procedures for the border crossing, which has been a vital link between the two North African nations. Under the agreement, all four shared gates at the Ras Jedir crossing will be opened. The accord also addresses the issue of name similarities between citizens of both countries to streamline identification processes, a long-standing concern that has complicated border procedures.
To facilitate smoother cross-border traffic, six electronic vehicle registration centers will be established, operating in both directions. Both parties have committed to avoid imposing unauthorized fees or financial penalties. The agreement also stipulates enhanced security measures at the port and the removal of any armed presence from the border area.
